Don't be a Twit and get on Twitter -___-
Twitter, like many other platforms of social media, is an outlet for expression. Whether those expressions come in the form of ideas, opinions or inquisitions Twitter is the over encompassing place to bring all these things together. In the instance of journalism, Twitter has seemingly become the go-to site for journalists to get their articles read. Journalists have used Twitter to depict their personalities in a way that can not always be done through journalistic writing. Ronan Furrow is someone who I have seen a lot on the platform. Having an audience on Twitter can be the only thing you need to start a movement and that is something he did with the #metoo movement he helped start. Angela Rye is a big personality that I always see using Twitter to get points across and clarify things she has said on CNN. She is a political commenter that has rose to prominence on the web for her uninhibited opinions on the political climate. Aside from journalist and commenters on social media, politicians have been seen to use the platform to their advantage. Since most of what you see on Twitter is tailored to your preferences and interest, it is a great place for politicians to reach their specific audience through the use of hashtags and keywords."
Twitter has become a platform where people do not just want to be social and make new friends. It has become an incubator for movements and new ideas. Through Twitter, you can experience a thread of tweets where people create movie ideas with their favorite actors and actually spark a flame in it becoming something that actually gets created (This is an instance of Twitter being an outlet for inspiration). If you clicked on the previous link then you can see how powerful the platform is. Aside from being an incubator for new ideas, it is also a great place for promoting a new business or business idea, you can even just use it to promote yourself as a brand. Many people use Twitter to crowdsource funds for new projects through the use of Kickstarted and GoFundMe. These are all examples of how Twitter can be used for marketing. Since Twitter is a web (spiderweb not interweb) you can easily reach thousands of new people through the shares and likes that their friends make. Twitter is a great place to market."
A way that Twitter has been used beyond socialization is by being a crutch to fall on during an emergency. A lot of the times when people are in dangerous situations in which they need help, they rely on phone service to contact the police or maybe a family member. Seldom do people think of Twitter as the place to go to find help. As the world keeps evolving and social media continues to integrate itself into society, more and more people will start using the platform as a call for help. Even now it is used for things like amber alerts, school shooting notices, disaster relief efforts and many more. The reason why Twitter is a great place to find help is because the second someone notices your struggle and wants to help, but can not exactly be there for them, they can share your cry for help. Once a cry for help is shared, all it takes is the right person or the right domino effect of shares for the right people the get notified. In an article on SLATE website called Viral Tweets Are Helping Some People Find Help in Houston. Social Media Can Do Much Better you can read about how cries for help were being answered through the magic of Twitter. This is an excerpt from that article:
More than 14,000 people retweeted Maritza Gonzalez Willis’ message saying that she and two children were stranded. The “water is swallowing us up … 911 is not responding,” she tweeted late Saturday night. Two hours later, she tweeted that they’d been picked up by a fire rescue team: “One of you had connections and all I can say is I’ll be eternally grateful!!!” On Facebook on Sunday night, Willis told her followers that Facebook, Twitter, and “every single one of you” had saved their lives. “I am humbled by your love and need all of you to know that your messages gave me the strength when all I wanted to do was cry,” she wrote.
In a situation where phone lines to emergency services, some were lucky enough to get their message across through social media."
Another important use for a social media platform such as Twitter is that it allows for business to communicate with their publics. As any Public Relations professional could tell you, social media is an essential tool to maintain a positive image in the eyes of the consumer. Aside from using Twitter as a way to promote new products, it is also a great place to communicate during a crisis. Whenever an organization is going through a PR crisis, social media is one of the ways that the organization can speak to the world without relying on the media to speak the public. If you go on the pages of companies that are in tune with this generation, you will see all types of people commenting on their posts. These comments sometimes consist of problems people have with a particular product or service. Depending on how active the PR department for these companies are, you will also see comments from the company's page replying how the issues can be solved."
One of the biggest events this year was the fires that spread in California destroying the homes of many. These fires that ravaged through oceanside homes ruining the lives of many residents took front stage in the screens of everyone who was on social media. For days upon days, people were tweeting about the loss of homes and the loss of loved ones. In this instance, people were able to learn that not all the people who lived in places like Malibu were super rich and in need of no sympathy from the people online. The world was able to see that relatable people were in disastrous situations where they lost everything they had. In this instance Twitter was helpful by opening up the world to people in other parts of the country, allowing them to realize that the situation is much bigger then they thought. The Haiti earthquake was another instance where Twitter was very helpful in supplying the suffering country with support. Through the use of hashtags such as #prayforhaiti and #haitiearthquake people were able to raise funds for the people of Haiti."
For Eudy’s Twitter, the three accounts that he chose to follow are @Adweek @RottenTomatoes and @KaitMarieox. These accounts are comprised of an account that relates to his career interest, an account that he would never follow, and an account that he just finds interest in finding. @KaitMarieox is an account that Eudy would never really follow mostly because her rhetoric is one that I find repulsive. By following her, I am opening myself up to people and ideas that I do not agree with. She is a big supporter of the NRA and against the fight to implement stricter gun laws in America. Rotten Tomatoes is an account I follow because I am very into movies and the views shared by other people on certain movies. Through Rotten Tomatoes Eudy gets to read about what people think of a specific movie and how reviewers interpreted the stories. Adweek is a fun account to follow. Eudy is very into the world of advertisement because he likes to see new creative campaigns that give him a new outlook on a product. By following Adweek he is able to be up to date with campaigns that have changed the games as well as campaigns that were complete failures."
Twitter is an experience. Eudy has had many twitter accounts because every time he would make one, he would be confused as to how to use it and what exactly it was. Now that he knows how to use it, he uses it every day. Twitter is different from other social media platforms because Eudy is not very used to using words to express himself on social media. His usual post on Instagram would be heavy on visuals and light on text. This is different on Twitter because there he would have to focus more on being succinct and articulate to properly get a message across."
